(CHP) Combined Heat & Power, also known as cogeneration, is an efficient, clean, and reliable technology, which simultaneously generates power and thermal energy from a single fuel source. By installing a CHP system designed to meet the thermal and electrical base loads of a facility, CHP can greatly increase the facility’s operational efficiency and decrease energy costs. At the same time, CHP reduces the emission of greenhouse gases.
CHP systems are located on-site, thereby eliminating distribution losses that a central power plant experiences. CHP is 85% efficient due to the capture of useable heat from the generator engine for use in Domestic Hot Water heating, space heating, absorption cooling, dehumidification, pool water heating, and process heat. In stark contrast, traditional central power plants are approximately 35% efficient, because heat is released to the atmosphere or nearby bodies of water.
Commercial combined heat and power (comCHP) systems, are small to medium distributed energy generation systems that produce electricity while also capturing heat that would otherwise be treated as waste.
